L-6 means it's an inLine 6 cylinder engine. Is that what you are asking?

The earlier 216/235/261 engines were also inline 6 cylinder engines (Chevrolet).

The earlier 228/248/270/302 engines were also inline 6 cylinder engines (GMC).
