The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Doors 51 Truck door hinge cage nuts ....Help!

In removing the doors to the '51, several of the door hinge bolts broke in the mounts in the door frame. In trying to remove the broken off bolts they are now spinning. It seems the cage nuts are turning.

Anyone done this repair? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any idea why the broken off bolts would spin in their holes and not come out when pounding on them?

Something holds the cage nuts?

yes, cages - you may have forced open one or more sides of the cage to allow the nut to turn, but there's still the "back" of it attached

I am think maybe drilling 1-1 1/2" access holes from the footwell area on the inner panels to get a tool on them?

How many bolts are turning?

is it just on the lower pillars?

If its the bottom bolt of the lower hinge pillar you may not be able to access it from the inner kick panel.

to weld a new nut you need clean rust free metal to weld to. That may be a challenge in that area

I would try grinding the heads off first and see if the rest of the bolt and nut falls in. The fine threads may be stripped. I like drilling out busted and stripped bolts with a left hand drill set I have.
Then you can determine how to repair.

Five of the six in the driver's door pillar. I will continue to work on drilling em out and see if I can pick out the remaining threads.
