I'm currently installing a 261 out of a late 50s car into my 61 1/2ton 4x4 Carryall. The original engine was a 235.I just realized that the bellhousing is different. Are the timing marks on the two bellhousings the same? Will I create any timing issues if I use my original b.housing on the 261?Are there any other differences I need to consider when doing this swap?

You can use your original bellhousing, along with the flywheel, starter and clutch package if you want to. I am using a 235 package on my 261, but with my original 216 bell housing. Carefully check that you are using the right throw out bearing if you purchase new. There are depth differences.

No, assuming you are using the 235 flywheel from your 61.

Well its done and I'm smiling. The 261 sounds great.I can't wait to put it on the road and try it out.Future plans are to convert it to HEI and to install a one wire alternator.

Doing the alternator conversion on my 261 this week, although 3 wire and continuing with brake upgrade using dual master cylinder. I haven't run my 261 too much. No mufflers! Elderly neighbors are tolerant, but not all the time. LOL.

What is the easiest way to convert from a gen to an alternator? Is there a harness I can buy to plug in?

The switch is simple. You'll need an alternator, DA Plug and a bracket. Some Stovebolters have made their own bracket and there is discussion on the use of a 1 wire alternator(very simple to use) or 3 wire(equally as simple). Do a search and you'll find info. Here are some links from Jim Carter for what he sells. You may find it cheaper from other suppliers. Use an alternator of at least 60-70 amps or more if you have a lot of powered accessories.

Adding instructions on wiring come with the DA Plug.

I put a 261 in my '54 Bel Air years ago and even replaced the torque tube driveline. My end gears are from Goetz (296:1) and it has a T-5 five speed also. Great to drive, smooth runner and good power. The only other changes are a HEI, 12 volt, and a two barrel carburetor. Oh, disc brakes around too.
