The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Malfunctioning Over Running Clutch?

As I understand things, this is the order of occurences in starter operation:

1) Depressing the foot pedal causes a lever to shift the pinion into mesh with the flywheel teeth.

2) Further pedal movement brings an offset portion of the lever into contact with the button on the starter switch.

Now, if the switch makes contact before the meshing of the pinion into the flywheel, would that most likely be due to the over running clutch not operating properly?

Could be a worn out starter ring or a worn out starter pinion or both ,pull the starter and check the pinion ,and pull off the inspection cover from the bell housing and check the flywheel starter ring.

I don't know what your symptoms are but here is what happened with mine. Periodically and then increasingly frequently my starter would make a horrible grinding noise. I checked the flywheel and there was some ring gear damage starting. I replaced the starter with a spare and the problem vanished. When I took the starter apart I discovered that the clutch assembly was worn out and it had a lot of play in the mechanism such that the gear would not always align properly, I guess.
