i plan to use the 216 bell and flywheel on my 235
should/can i use the 216 press plate and throwout bearing too?
also is there a picture/diagram of the shift linkage for a floor shift using the 833 trans?

Did the trans come with the Hurst shifter and linkage? Do you need a pic of how it is set up? I can get a pic of mine if needed.
I was told that it is ok to use the 216 clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing with this trans.
If anyone knows differently, please let us know.

What is the casting number on the transmission located on the case? It should be C-15390 for the Chevrolet bolt pattern, the other style has the MOPAR bolt pattern and needs a special bell housing. I think the casting number is C-15475. There were two different styles of shifters, which do you have? I am working on installing mine and had the bell housing bored to fit the bearing cap instead of turning the bearing cap (Thanks BIGBADSWINGDADDY)

Check out the HO52 & HO72 EATON REAR DIFFERENTIALS post that I have going in the ebay/craigslist section for information and rear ends.

it doesn't have any linkage
i'm sure it's a gm because of the "H" bolt pattern
i saw it briefly and it spins
i have to go back in a week to pay and pickup (darn job!)
i'll need any pics and or diagrams for the linkage and a source for the hurst
so am i to understand that it is better to turn the bell rather than the bearing cap?
we still need to replace the cap bolts with lower profile fasteners though right?

I'll need any pics and or diagrams for the linkage and a source for the hurst EBAY AND CRAIGSLIST, I'VE LOOKED AT THE HURST SITE AND THEY DO NOT OFFER THEM ANYMORE OR HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THEM. THEY WILL REBUILD THEM.

So am I to understand that it is better to turn the bell rather than the bearing cap? MY PREFERENCE, PLUS JOHN DID THE WORK FOR ME AT A FRIENDS SHOP. HE RECOMMENDS DOING IT THAT WAY. BOTH WAYS WORK.

We still need to replace the cap bolts with lower profile fasteners though right? NO.

Read the article I posted earlier, it has a lot of information that will help. I have more information that I gathered over time if you need it. I learned a lot from reading the oldgmctrucks.com forums, several members have done the replacement and have more details on how to do it. There was an article in the September 2008 HOT ROD DELUXE issue, page 84, not as great as I had heard, but it does cover some of the issues with the exchange.

i don't recall seeing the linkage but then i wasn't looking for it. i was more interested in the bolt pattern for the bell
plus the guy that's selling it knew all about the gm a833's
i'm certain it's a gm but now i'm wondering if i should get it if it doesn't have the shifter
i read the article you posted it has great pics
that shifter is probably as rare to find as the eaton 4:10!

Keep looking and be patient! They are out there. I have two and have connected several others to the ones I have found on ebay and craigslist. There are two on craigslist now, but they have the bell housing. I bought mine off of craigslist and ebay, one came with the shifter and the other was a separate purchase.

They are becoming very popular now because of the gas prices and the articles that have been written on them. Before you pass up the transmission, double check the casting numbers, it should read C-15390 on the case, if it does, I would still consider buying it. What is he asking for it?

Did you check out the HO52 & HO72 post?

Gmoniz, thanks for the info. I am going to start on my 51 changing the trans and rear center section this summer.
I also would like to have the bell reamed out but it is in the truck and I don't want to mess with that. I'm just going to have the retainer turned down and use the allen bolts and lock washers that they recomended in Classic Truck.
If you have more info about this swap, I would love to see anything that you want to share, because I know something will go wrong when I get into this. This will be my first major project on this truck since I've owned it.(16 yrs.)
Thanks again.
rgie, sorry for jumping your thread.

the casting # on the bearing cap is 15397 just like the one in the photo in the article about tranny on a budget.

there is no shift link but i had a long talk with the guy i'm buying it from and he said they used to make them all the time and that if i want i can fab the shifter mount bracket to get the shifter closer to the hole in the floor.
so i'm gonna go ahead and get it
i'll keep looking for the links since it'll be a while before i need to mount it
by the way he also had a mopar version of the 833 with linkage
we put them side by side and you could see that the shift linkage was shorter on the mopar

memphis-
no problem just keep posting what you learn about this swap

The casting number I am referring to is located on the main body, not the bearing cap.

Post some pictures of it. I think you found the third casting number. The bolt pattern is correct.
