There have been several discussions about why manufacturers only put keyed door handles on the passenger side. The consensus is pretty much that it was a safety issue, no one would have to stand in traffic to lock/unlock the door. Once the passenger door is unlocked they would reach through to unlock the driver's door. I don't know the setup of your 49 but my 38 has a standard door lock button that extends through the garnish molding. Pull up to unlock, push down to lock.

As mentioned above, the external keyed driver's-side door-lock was a factory option (not standard) that was only available for doors with non-moving outside door handles (52-55).

The inside door handle was used to lock/unlock from the inside the driver's-side door on 47-55 trucks.

You either push the handle forward or pull it backward, to either lock the door or open the door from the inside of the cab. The direction for moving the handle for locking the door changed during the 1948 model year: pull the handle to open; push the handle to lock.

As Tim said, if you move the inside handle in the opposite direction from opening the door, it should click into locked position. If it doesn't, you'll need to pull it apart and find out what is going on in there.

Watch alot of the old movies you see getting in on the passenger side and sliding across was common in those days. For the longest time I wondered why drivers door was unkeyed and it hit me watching Psycho. Not as many folks worried about locking their doors then, especially rural.

I just bought a matching lock set from LMC for my 55 S2 3100. Like your truck, mine only had a lock on the passenger door. To lock the truck you would have to lock the drivers door from the inside and then scoot out the passenger door and lock it from the outside. So far, I have only installed the lock on the drivers door and it just prevents the outside button from pushing down. This means that if the lever on the inside is in the locked position it will not unlock it. I have not gotten around to installing the new lock on the passenger side yet so I am not sure about how it will work. Be careful when ordering these parts. I live near LMC and the counter guys had to open 3 different kits before we found one where all the locks and keys matched and worked together.
