I am having trouble adjusting the parking brake cable to the right tension. After 60 years it's probably stretched.

Is there anywhere out there I can get new cables without having them custom made? I have seen some for short beds, but they are way too short.

Dave I also have a 1951 Chev 1 ton. Had similiar issues . I think I went to J C Carter Classic truck parts for cables.Caution, Hang on to your Used cable, as I recall, you will need a part or so from them to marry to the new cable set up. What I found later was some previous ID10T had not replaced the circular Emergency Brake rod . This rod activates Both rear shoes on the Huck Brake system. The cable only pulls the Emergency brake Lever and one brake shoe. This rod connects and activates Both rear shoes. Somewhere on this site is a repair manual showing this Huck Setup. My setup has a link connecting the brake lever to a crossbar. Then each brake shoe has a cable connected to the corresponding end of the crossbar. All the pieces are there. The tension on one side was adjusted all the way. I may just have to get custom length cable and use my existing parts.

I asked at my local Napa store where I could get new cables and they suggested a local speedo shop that could do the work.

So some time has passed, and I am now fully ready to redo the rear brakes.

As was mentioned you need parts from the old cables here are some pics of the pieces I had to replace or order in conjunction.

This one shows what I had to salvage. I ended up having someone cut it and weld it onto the new cable.

I couldn't find a clevis as long, but I used a shorter one available from Jim Carter and just didn't thread it as far. It reaches just fine.
