I bought a frozen slightly rusted carter w1 carb at a swap meet and would like to see if I can get it unstuck and working just for grins. I have used vinigar on rusted parts with very good success at removing the rust so I was thinking of soaking the carb in a gallon of vinigar for a week or so.
Does anybody have a homegrown trick to unstick the carb?

I've heard of using Coca-Cola to dissolve rust, but never tried it myself. I prefer to use Kroil, made by Kano Laboratories here in Nashville. It's one of the best penetrating oils I've ever used.

I think GUNK sells a gallon can of Carb cleaner, soak it for a while and see if that does it. I have used it and it seems to work and may accomplish the mission. I tried coke on a heat riser and it may actually have worked, but I was using some other things as well to free it up, so I can't say if that was what finally worked. It is a cheap attempt, see what happens.

Have you taken it apart yet? If the bowl is full of corrosion its junk. The W-1 has a brass tube inside for the accel pump. If the pump is corroded inside it is probably no good. If the throttle shaft is froze up in the cast iron throttle body I heat the area arond the shaft with a torch & free it up.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

I would suggest taking it apart before you spend money on chemicals.
