Jul 21st, 2025 | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 24 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 24 | I have a couple of distributors from 80's Chev p/u with an I6.I've read articles that say this distributor can be modified to fit the 235/261 engine.Is there any interference because of the larger diameter cap?Besides running a larger wire are there any other mods that need to be done to make this work? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | The HEI housing doesn't fit deep enough into the stovebolt engine to get a good shaft engagement into the oil pump, so the positioning collar on the housing needs to be machined or ground off and the clamp that holds the vacuum advance from the stovebolt distributor is used to adapt the HEI to the block. Once the mechanical fit is right, run a heavy wire from the ignition switch to the HEI power plug- - - - -I like to use a #10 wire to carry the necessary current, just like GM did when they made the factory wiring harness for the HEI. Obviously, the electrical system has to be 12 volts.
