| | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 | i know i will probably get blasted for this, but i have looked and cant find this number anywhere on the web to see what i have. i cleaned the engine today and found the stamped numbers behind the distributor. they are gbm 423268. i just wanna know what motor and year it is. the cast number lower on block is conv1 g80.

Brian | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 | possibly tim. i bought the engine off a guy that said it was from a 49-53 chevy truck.i have a 46 and was gonna swap it for the rusted out motor that is in my truck now. the engine does have the motor mounts in front. the gbm actuall looks like someone else stamped them. i say that cause the b is more like an 8 with a 1 stamped down it to make a b and the m looks like a bunch of 1's stamped to look like a m. not sure if this is how they actually stamped the motors back then or not. i will try to get a picture this weekend. it wouldnt show up on my phone's camera. hopefully someone can help me with this mystery. there is a pic of the engine after i got it home on the signiture link

The actual block casting number is below the distributor or dip stick.
The G80 is probably the casting date: G=7th month=July, 8=8th day of month, 0=50 => July 8, 1950. CONV1 is conveyor #1, or line #1 in the casting plant.

Post what you find here and people will help you decode them. The engine serial number is the best indicator of what year and model the engine was installed in (of course, over the past 50+ years engines get replaced and/or moved between vehicles). | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 | ok that link help out alot. i'll go check the actual casting number tonight. it was serial number i was looking at. thanks tim! | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 14 | thanks for that link again tim. i brushed the casting numbers off last night but forgot to writedown the seventh digit, but with a date code of 1950, it kinda narrowed it down to a 1950 216. the cast number that i wrote down was 383549. 3835497 is a 42-53 216 and 3835491 is a 1954 235. thanks again! | | |
