I'm rebuilding a manufactured in 64 283 that was in pieces when I got it. The manuals I have mention a thrust plate, but,I know the 350's have a thrust plate on the front of the engine but the 283 does not. Doe's the timing gear keep the cam from sliding back? What keeps the cam from sliding back and forth. I know there is a "button" that goes between the timing cover and gear, but, again, what goes between the back of the cam and the freeze plug?...if anything. Thanks.

Hy gc60c10, welcome, the cam does not have a "thrust plate" the timing gear stops, it from moving back too far and the distributor gear, timing chain, and ultimately the timing cover stop it from moving too far forward, not to mention all the lifters and the fuel pump drive load on the cam, hope that helps.

If you're using a double-row high performance timing chain, it's a good idea to install a nylon thrust button that keeps the cam from walking back and forth in the block. That causes ignition timing variations. Regular flat-link timing chains are stiff enough to get by without using thrust control. I like to braze a flat washer to the outside of the timing cover on race engines to reinforce the cover where the thrust button contacts it.

Hi Jerry, I'm using a single row chain and I will use a trust button like you suggest. Thanks.

Make sure there's a tiny bit of clearance between the button and the timing cover. I like to see 1/16" or less, but not close enough to make the button rub all the time.
