I put the new rochester B carb I got from Holley on the truck today.

I adjusted it using my old vacuum gauge. The needle was a little shaky. I took it out for a ride. It stumbled a little so I picked up a new vacuum gauge which was more stable. I adjusted the carb further and it is much better.

The 235 gave me about 20% more power now that the head is fixed. The new carb gave it about 10% more.

I took the truck out for a few errands and ran the highway. When I got back I checked the plugs and they were nice and tan.

The engine (carb) makes a funny sound if I hit the accelerator hard from idle. Just a 1 second high pitched squeak (almost like a whistle). Anyone ever heard of this or know the solution?

Make sure you have the correct base gasket (with notches). Check to make rue your accelerator pump is giving you a good squirt when you move the throttle.

I will check the accelerator pump tomorrow. The base gasket came with the carb. and the notches line up with the pin hole in the bottom of the carb. They do not line up with any notches in the insulator...should there be notches in the insulator? My old engine had them.

It does not do it any other time than when I hit the throttle fast from idle. It does not seem like a vacuum leak but I suppose it could be.

I will also contact service at Holley. The carb came with a warrantee and a service number for troubleshooting. They are not open today and the stovebolt always gives me good advice.

BTW the engine does not hesitate when this happens...Can I assume that this is a good indication that the accelerator pump is ok???

If it isn't hesitating, then why worry about it?

I bet it is just demanding alot of air, really quick when you stomp on it and it causes it to whistle.

You may need to tighten the fan belt a little. It could be slipping.

It doesn't seem to affect hesitation but it is annoying

I have had a carb that had the base warped a bit and allowed the gasket to vibrate and squeal like a harmonica reed. doesn't really sound like what you got going on, but maybe...

I changed the gasket and exposed the "other" hole in the bottom of the carb and the squeal is gone.


I had 2 different gaskets each with notches in different places. There are 2 small holes int he mounting flange. THe new gasket seems to have remedied the squeal.

Now I am on to my timing and new hesitation issues

BTW Holley was little help. The only rebuild these they done't know about their application. Their suggestion was to return it for another one.

I'm in the market for a new Rochester B, so would you mind telling me what you paid for yours from Holley?

You can look it up on their website but the catalog is hundreds of pages and hared to read on line. They were helpful on the phone when ordering.

I did have one small problem. The choke was installed incorrectly. It took me a few minutes to fix. It seems to be working pretty well. I thought it leaked a little (like most Rochester b) but I replaced the clamp on the filter and no more leak.
