For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 217 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 217 | I just picked up a rearend with an open driveshaft at a swapmeet. PO said he thinks it came from 50s chev. It has 6 lug axles and an open driveshaft. I want to replace the pinion shaft seal but need some specs to order the right one. Can anyone help with the years chev introduced the open driveshaft? Thanks in advance Rick,,, | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | 1941 was the first year for the 6 lug open drive rear.
That probably won't help you much because it was only offered on the 3/4 tons. 1954 or 1955.1 generally are credited to be the first 1/2 tons with open drive. That same axle was used in 1/2 tons with minor changes up to the early 60s. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | In 1954, all driveshafts EXCEPT the 6-lug 1/2 ton were totally open driveshafts. The 1955-1st series 1/2 tons were the first "year"/series 6-lug 1/2 ton trucks with an open driveshaft. It looks like the same 1/2 ton pinion seal was used from 55-59 (and even later).
