I have the manual on a 51 chevy...says to put in 1 1/2 pints of oil in the Tranny...seems like more came out when I drained the oil...Reading past answers in the forum...one guy says to fill it until your pinky touches the fuild in the fill plug? So how much do I put in? Do I fill it until my pinky touches the fuild or 1 1/2 pints..because if I fill it until my pinky touches the fuild that is more than 1 1/2 pints...

My '54 manual says 5 pints in the 4-speed (and 1 1/4 pint in the standard 3-speed; and 2 3/4 pints in the heavy-duty 3-speed).

The owners manual for '51 shows 6 quarts total capacity. http://chevy.tocmp.com/chevyowner/51tom98.htm

Fill it until you can touch the fluid with your pinky, or until it just run's out the fill hole.

Nope, LONGBOX55 - typo error - The owners manual for '51 shows 6 pints (not quarts) total capacity.

The capacities I posted above for 1954 are all wrong - for American trucks (I was mistakenly looking at a Canadian Shop Manual - Imperial quarts/pints/gills/etc).

The USA 1951 (and 1954) Shop Manuals show 6 pints for the 4-speed and 1 1/2 pints for the 3-speed transmissions.

Oops-my bad. I meant pints. I did check in a '58 manual-it says 5 1/2 pints for a drain and refill, 6 if overhauled.
