Hi guys/gals, i'm an independent insurance appraiser from Central Florida. I need a little help an a serial number. The truck I'm dealing with has a number that starts 2NLxxxxxx. I know the 2 is for Tarrytown, NY. I've looked on every site I know of and nothing shows an 'NL' for either car or truck. Can anyone shed some light on 'NL'?

whats the truck- that might help us out- at least the year. Is it the VIN or is it the engine number? If the number you have is off of a title or reg. and pre 55, it might be an engine number.

It's supposed to be a 1942 1/2 ton. The guy found a cab without the serial number plate on it. I know the engine numbers are far different (usually starting AAKxxxxxx or similar). The engine in the truck is a 502.

The number sequence is similar to GM, but I've still seen nothing in the GM manuals that show anything begining with an '2NL'. Thoughts?

A 502 in a 1/2 ton? Sounds like the truck is pieced together.

Oh, yeah. And I'm thinking the serial number is the same way.

so ... what was the question? where does the number come into it? from the title? why would the number on a title relate to a collection of parts?

if it was a gmc i could help you out. since its a chevy i know less than you do.

This collection of parts actually rolls on an S-10 chassis. It's cobbled together. I need to verify the Serial Number matches the vehicle. I might be willing to say that cab may have gone done the Tarrytown Assembly Plant. But what year? Was this a 1/2 ton? Was it a CEO (no)? Was it from a 2 ton truck?

From all the GM stuff I see so far, 'NL' means...nothing. There wasn't an 'NL'. It this is the case, this guy needs to get the vehicle titled correctly.

Why does this make a difference? If totaled, the insurance company now buys the salvage. Then THEY are responsible when someone who knows these trucks says, "Hey! There was no 'NL' truck!" If I can't show that 'NL' means something and the vehicle isn't a total, they'll drop him because the vehicle is a ...fraud.

where is the truck? you know the issue i was having with mine from contact on tjj. I have found the forms to get georgia to issue a new serial # for my 41. could it be the same type of deal?

Sure wish people would use real names in their post. It is nice to know whom you are corresponding with.
To your problem. I suggest you come up with a valid engine #. Sounds like the # you are asking about does not exist. Once you get a # take it to your State Motor Vehicle Registration Office & apply for a corrected Title (if you live in a title state). If not a title state you will probably need a Bill of Sale with the motor # listed. Trucks did not have VIN numbers until sometime in the 1950's. The Tag on the cab was a unit ID #.
