HI peoples,
The question is my buddy has a 235 with a 11" paper air filter with a chrome top after market from Jim Carters...I have the old messy oil bath on my 235. When driving in his truck when he hits the gas you can hear a sucking sound in the cab as the carb grabs air...most annoying to me. I wanted to abandon my oil bath for a filter like his but not with the noise it makes....any suggestions around this noise problem...another type of after market filter....THANKS, Steve :rolleyes:

Maybe just a carb with respiration issues.
Take off the air filter at idle and rev the rpms and listen if the sound is still there....

I have used paper filters and K&N filters - no sounds.
If anything the sucking air sound should get quieter with any type of filter.

Hi Steve,,Maybe a vacuum leak under the dash?? like the vacuum line going to the wiper motor?
Neither of my trucks make a sucking sound,,but ive been told that chevys suck on numerous occasions.(darn ford people,,what do they know)

I agree with all above but if nothing else works K&N can prove their filters flow better than any other aftermarket filters. Their words not mine.

HEY....wait I'm telling you that it makes noise when you stomp on the gas. The air filter is completely open 360 degrees around and when you want more power you can hear the air make a whoosh and its not a vacuum leak. This sounds like a big gulp of air and plenty of power but its noisy. If you take the filter off and rev the engine you know that noise you get from the carb its that noise but more muffled when in the cab....and how come I don't get it with my oil bath set up...I think because the paper filter is very thin and there is no foam wrapper around it only expanded metal so air rushes in and thus the noise?...Steve

the thin cheap tin air cleaner and very porous paper filter is quite like having no air cleaner at all .... the stock oil bath is a heavy double wall item with the air having to do some fancy turns thru a film of oil, actually designed to be an effective sound dampner

if you search around here you'll find some folks have replaced the guts of the oil bath with a paper filter that seems to work well, and you won't have the noise, which the folks who like to impress themselves with how much gas their hot rod burns seem to prefer

THANKS BILL.....I agree. I have see some OME air cleaners on 54 that have a smaller can with the front face open and they have a spun metal filter...I think that this can be converted to a paper element type....now I have to find one to convert. My filter is the large oil bath type, its just heavy and dirty that's why I would like to get one of the smaller OME types that I have seen on other 54's... hope I can find one? Steve

I kinda like the noise from my 216 oilbath filter. Sounds like the blower on a 318 Detroit.

The oil bath air cleaner is also known as an intake filter/silencer, so it will be quieter that any other type.

Does it sound like the carb is trying to suck the
hood thru it?

YEP.....as you push on the gas pedal you can hear the air being sucked in to the throat of that mighty Rodchester B... as soon as you let up its a quiet as a shadow. I can do without the noise, takes away from hearing the engine purrrrr....still looking for a perfect non-oil bath air filter...Steve
