The trans has started to whine as I accellerate so I expect something is wrong. This is a non overdrive trans. So my question is: Will a newer trans with overdrive just bolt in?

GM upgraded in 91 to the 4L80E (overdrive) which is electronic computer controlled. Perhaps someone offers a kit for the conversion. You might try Bowtie Overdrives. The 1500 series trucks used a 700R4 overdrive whch may also work with some possible differences in the tailshaft length, yoke, and u-joint.

With a little help from a drill, hot wrench, some off-set special application bolts, I'm sure you can make it work. I'm sure one of your "old truck" friends would help you. I'm not too busy right now.

Bill, I still need to accelerate, so, I studied it a little and found that if I turn the radio way up loud, I don't hear it anymore. Problem solved!!
