Anyone notice that the 1941-1946 chevy shop manual has no instructions for removing the engine for the truck??? Gotta be simple enough though. Should I remove the 4 bolts from the bellhousing to transmission, and all three motor mounts and pull it that way or do I pull it WITH the transmission still attached as well? Thanks

Support the trans. & leave it in.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Ok. Thanks! That is the route I started to take...all was going well except the rear engine supports are a bear! The bolt through the cross member just spins and the two that screw into the bellhousing are nearly impossible to remove from what I can tell so far (the top bolt was easy, the bottom buried in dirt and grease and the bolt to frame nut is in the way). Any suggestions?

On our 46 the trans was supported by the frame cross member , with no front sheet metal on, the engine came out slick. This is a 3/4 ton so perhaps the frame is different.

Ok, got the engine out! After digging out lots of dirt and grease from around the lower bolts, it was obvious to just take out the cross member bolt and remove the engine with the mounts attached. Was finally able to get a socket on the top of the bolt from inside the cab and use another socket from under to get them out. Should have drained tranny before removing two lower bellhousing bolts though as they became an escape for the fluid. Ooops! smile

BTW, is it normal for the tranny fluid to empty out both lower bolts that connect tranny to bellhousing? My neighbor thought it was not.

I don't see how that can happen, the mounting pads do not go into the transmission, at least they don't on my 41 3-speed. Just thought about it again, could you have disturbed the countershaft while loosening it from the bellhousing and the leak was from the counter shaft? Dave

The bottom right bolt hole on my 41 four speed does apear to go all the way thru just below the reverse idler shaft. This would leak fluid when the bolt is removed as the oil level when full is about 1" above that hole.
