The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Electrical Bay Points getting fried -- why? Help

I just got it back from paint and found that the points were fried...thought it was because the painter left the key ON for days...well until I was over and noticed the key in the on position.

Anyway, I just slipped a brand new set of standard blue streaks I have had for like years and after about a minute it fried those too...'

after about a minute of what? leaving the key on without the engine running? very unlikely .... what exactly does "fried" mean? was the truck running well before going for paint? what condition is the wiring in, things unhooked for painting and just re-installed?

I checked the voltage at the coil while truck was running and it is about 6 so I am totally confused at this point!!

Hy bigdog58, a bad condensor could cause the problems you describe, also check the the plate that the points mount to for a good ground, there is a wire that grounds that plate to the distributor housing, because the plate must move for the vacuum advance to work, hope that helps.
