I totally cleaned the fuel system and installed a new carb kit. The motor starts right up and idles nicely. I hear a popping/backfiring noise in third and fourth gear. If I am going down a hill it doesn't pop, but accelerating in the upper gears at any time makes it start popping. I also checked the distributor for bad points. Any suggestions or tips would be very appreciated.

Check timming, should be on the ball at an idle.

If you have a gas filter,in line, check that, sounds like it could be running lean under load .Cloged filters do that.

What carb are you running?

A good general tune up is the place to start. Every good tune up starts with setting valve lash hot.

An old friend helped me check the valves when I first brought the truck home. I'll check them again. I'll get a new fuel filter, too. The fuel pump is just the basic one that O'Reilly's sells. Is there a better quality one out there?

What the others said and check for vacuum leaks too. Tighten dow the carburetor and check all vacuum hoses, including the one to the wipers. Check to make sure that your float is set correctly.

According to the owners manual, the carb is the one barrel model "B". It is in good shape.
By the way, were you in Riverside, Mo this summer at the truck show? I think I saw your truck. Sweet!

Well, since I posted last I changed the wiper motor to 12 volt.
I also discovered that I had the firing order wrong. My wife found some used Michelin's at a local swap meet.
I've been driving it to work once a week, usually on Friday.
One thing I need advice on is that I have to dribble a little gas in the carb before it'll start. Every now and then I have noticed gas leaking from where the fuel line screws in the carb. Is the fuel leaking out or evaperating between rides?

Do you pull the choke when it's cold? Also when it's not running< look down the throat of the carburetor and move the throttle shaft. If the accelerator pump is working it should squirt a little gas down the throat. If it isn't doing that, then you need to rebuild the carb.

Okay. read where you rebuilt the carb. Did you get the check valve ( bb) in the right place for the accelerator pump to work? Does it work?

It could be the cover leaking. If its a '50 it would be the first design B and they are prone to leaking. You may want to recheck the float level if the other things mentioned above don't help.

If you are indeed leaking from where it screws into the car, you might want to lossen the line and try putting the fitting a little further in. If it still leaks then you will need some type of sealant on the threads.

These sixes like a lot of choke to start. If you driving it only once a week there is a possibility that the gas is evaporating out of the carb. Personally I don't have a problem after a week.
