If you read my first thread "Paint Shop Dilemma" I had finally got the paint guy to finish the cab of my truck. I got it home and started assembling everything. A week later I went back to find that he hadn't moved on to my rear fenders, step sides, hood, and a few other parts. That was the last straw. I pulled everything but the hood (too big to fit in my Pathfinder). I tried to make everything amiable by paying him for the finished work and he said he would get the hood done.

I found a body shop to finish up the other parts and had them back within 2 weeks. I assembled everything last weekend. When I stood back I noticed the bedside was slightly different than the fender. It seemed transparent compared to the fender which is very opaque yellow. Out in the sun you do not see a difference, but inside the garage it is noticeable. Both shops use the same paint supplier so the paint is exactly the same. My only thought on this is that the first guy didn't apply enough coats or the paint was thinned too much. I remember mentioning to him a long time ago that the bed side seemed "transparent" but he convinced me it was the reflection of the concrete floor. I believed him because it looked so good in the sun. Well, I know different now because the fender the other shop looks very opaque in shade or sun.

Most people will not notice the difference, but I can, and that is all that matters. I can probably live with this for awhile, but will most likely have it reshot. I'm guessing all that needs to be done is light sanding and add another coat since it is single stage paint, right? I plan on taking the truck down to the shop to complain, but I'm not about to leave the truck with that shop again.

Mainly, I'm happy to have my truck finished and almost on the road. It looks good and I plan on enjoying it for years to come. But that slight difference will haunt me at night until it is fixed.

Just wanted to share my tale so everyone can learn from my mistakes.

You need to use the paint from the same can not the same shop.
If they mix 2 gallons at the same time, and one shop has one gallon and the other shop has the other then your okay. But then again different application could be different. Best to have all parts done the same day at the same time. Unless there are restraints to that. Then you just got to live with the results.

This forum is part technical advice and part psychiatrist!

Truckrolet,
I agree with you, though the original paint guy had to buy the paint more than once, so his work came out of two different cans. I think he thinned it too much, but I'm no paint pro. I do wish I could have had the truck done by one shop, but this guy just couldn't get it done. After 5 months all he had done was the bed sides, cab and front fenders. And I did 90% of the body work to boot!
