For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! They were obviously aware of the open drive shafts. The closed seems more costly and harder to work on. I once thought it had something to do with rear wheel traction but the 3/4 ton was closed at the transmission. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | the reason the 3/4 had the closed trans setup with the open rear is so they didn't have to have a different trans for it .... no telling why any older technology is kept or dropped, but the torque tube arrangement is still used in some applications Bill | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 | well for one thing it works, and you rarely have to work on them. I bought my truck in 1984, aside from changing oil a couple of times. I have never touched it. As a matter of fact it wasn't until about a year ago that I looked to see what was actually involved back there. It is actually a pretty good set up, since everything is sealed up, unlike the open drive line where the universal joints are exposed to any and everything you happen to drive through. Actually I haven't touched much on the whole truck........
