I was dressed to well to get under it and drove it home in first for 5 miles or so. not fun. Is this in the linkage or trans and what can i do to make it reliable? | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 1,329 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 1,329 | It could be the shift mechanizim on the steering colum allowing it to lock up, its likely worn out.
Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks. Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.
As of 10-26-2022, A 55.2 Taskforce long bed now the work begins

All fine now, but I'll have to make it right before I trust it. | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 136 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 136 | You can send your shift box to Jim Carters Chevy and they will rebuild it. Not to much cash, as I recall. It is in the engine compartment on top of the steering column. | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,112 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,112 | I remember having this problem on a 60 Pontiac. It is very frustrating when it happens. | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | Eric - take the top off the box on the lower column - clean it up well like this - make sure the notched arms are not excessively worn round at their openings [a little rounding is OK], the pawl isn't worn, and the spring isn't broken - see that the rod connections at the box arms are adjusted right as you move it thru the gears [carefully with the top off] - regrease it with some high temp grease [do not "pack" it full] .... replace the top and you'll be amazed at how much better it is .... also check the adjustment of the shift lever at the top according to the procedure in the shop manual at the beginning of section 7 Bill | | |
