I'm putting a gmc 302 in my 1/2 ton 54 chevy pickup. I found a 14 inch flywheel with a 168 tooth ring gear. I have a couple 6 volt starters I could use. Is there a starter drive I can put on my starter to match this flywheel?

You need to find the ultra rare 139 tooth flywheel to continue operating as a 6 volt. You could convert the truck to 12 volt and use a 55-59 chevy 12 volt foot stomp starter.

The bendix drives on the starters are not easily interchangeable from the 6 volt to 12 volt starter.

I do have the ring gear, I just thought if I could get a drive to match it would be easier than swapping the gears. I am going to make the truck 12volt but was going to run the 6 volt starter since I have those too. Thanks for the help.

Have you tried fitting the 14" flywheel into your clutch housing. A 14" clutch came out of a larger truck that used a larger clutch housing.

168 teeth flywheel is 12 volt. I believe the 14 inch measurement is an over all diameter, not the size of the clutch disc.

I don't believe the 6 volt ring gear will fit on the 12 volt flywheel. I could be wrong. I believe the 6 volt ring will be too loose.

Yea the 14 inch is the od of the flywheel. It is for an 11 inch clutch. There has to be a starter that fits it,the guy I got the flywheel from said it was from a 52 but they didn,t have 12 volt stuff then. The 302 I am using is from a 56 truck. It had a 12 volt flywheel but of course it is too big, 13 inch clutch.

The 55-59 chevy foot stomp, or 56, 58, and 59 gmc foot stomp starter will bolt right up to the bellhousing and give you 12 volt operation.

Does anybody know the casting number of the 6 bolt, 6 volt, 139 tooth flywheel? Or, any other positive identifing marks or dimensions?

The casting number for the 6 bolt 6 volt flywheel is the same as the casting number for the 6 bolt 12 volt flywheel.

This might lead you to believe that you could simply swap ring gears. It ain't that easy.

I have one of those, I thought it was off a chevrolet. I also have a 839754 - 777 and I'm wondering what it is. I know the ring gears are not interchangable, 6V to 12V and I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are not interchangeable Chevy - GMC. Usually the ring gear can be turned over if the teeth are worn, if it's simply not engaging well.

Googled the 839754 number and came up with a 139 tooth (6 volt) flywheel for a 216 chebby, that will also fit the 54-62 235 engine.

Count the teeth on the 838663-5 flywheel. 168 is 12 volt, 139 is 6 volts. Of course clutch size might also be different.

The 6 volt 6 bolt flywheel is found in 1954 and both series of 1955 GMC pickups with a 248. Sometimes its easier to find a whole parts pickup than just a flywheel. They used the same casting number for 6 and 12 volt flywheels. On one or the other, they machined the casting down a little more so that the 2 ring gears are not interchangeable.
