I know it's not original engine, I just can't I.D. it. Thanks,.....Rick

Clutchheadstew,

Interesting stuff. I don't know if GMC used many different vendors for motors, or just their own stuff. The vintage truck site shows a beautiful '51 640 and it notes it has a 503 engine in it. I used to drive a 10 wheel 'Cornbinder' with a huge gas V-8 in it, but my search didn't indicate IH made a 503 cubic inch motor....bigger, yes!

Someone with some knowledge will turn up I'm sure!

Any pix of it? And is it an inline or V engine? It kind of sounds like it may ba a big block GMC 6 that was used in the larger trucks.

The 503 was a monster 6cylinder used in the 640 series. Rick, in another forum, mentions the engine he is trying to ID appears to be a V-8.

It sounds like it might be a conversion of sorts. Maybe the pictures are a click away.

My cousin lurks in that neck of the woods, especially in old abandoned shipyards...this truck sounds like it could be one of his treasures!
