Does the chrome vent window assembly supposed to have some raised bosses or is this part of the old original rivets? Also, it appears that the previous owner just glued the old division post seals on. My question is this, is glue used to install these, just rivets or a combination. Also, when using rivets, I assume you rivet from inside the channel (door glass side) and can I just use regular pop rivets if I can get my rivet gun to fit? It seems like the rivets would show from the seal side...won't that interfere with the vent window sealing up against the seal itself????

Thanks.

LDO, I can give you one answer fairly quickly: the "felt" liner is glued into place. I used a Perma-Tex product and fashioned a piece of wood to press the felt against all three sides of the channel.

I got my rivets from a re-supply house, they came with the rebuild kit. I didn't have a gun. I had to use brute force and an anvil. Not elegant, but it got the job done.

My brain is cloudy concerning the rivet positioning. You'll have help on the way soon, I'm sure.

the correct rivet goes either way to hold the rubber seal, the crush end gets to be as flat as the head .... and NO, you can not use pop rivets, they stick out way too much, you need the correct rivets that can be flattened well on both sides so as not to interfere with either the vent closing [can break the glass] or the smooth sliding of the rollup glass frame .... there are holes where the rivets go, and there are actually 2 sets of rivets, the ones that hold the rubber on the vent post and another 2 or 3 that hold the post/channel to the vent frame

Tx & Bill,
many thanks. I didn't separate the post channel from the vent frame but there is a little 'wiggle' between the two. Can't complain for something that is 54 years old though. I will order the correct rivets and tool today. Funny though, there are 4 raised bosses on the post channel, is that normal?

LDO - I'll try it in words, hard to get good pics - there are rivets at each end of the vent frame that hold it to the channel, one at the very top top, 2 at bottom - those go under the felt and from your description will be the ones that are loose .... there are 4 rivets that hold the rubber vent seal, head ends in the 4 holes under the felt, crush ends sunk into the holes in the rubber [which has a metal core] .... there are 2 rivets that hold the sheet metal trim piece to the main channel, they go head end in [through] the felt, crush end under the rubber .... so there are 9 holes in the division bar, the "raised bosses" you see are rivet heads, probably the ones that hold the frame and the trim

Ok Bill, thanks. I will look at all of that when I get home to make sure I understand. I appreciate the 'stick & rudder'.

Ok,
here is what i'm talking about.
the first pic shows the raised bosses.
pic

Then, there are two smaller holes with nothing in them. probably for two additional rivets since there doesn't seem to be anything holding the chrome trim to the assembly...
pic 2

it would seem that the seal would sit a little raised up unless the rivets get really flat.

pic 3
don't know cause they're on order so the job will have to wait on the mail...

those 'raised bosses' are the rivet heads, the holes are for missing rivets - the heads do get quite flat, and the other end of the rivet needs to get equally flat, but if you look at the rubber edge on you can see a slight "wow" where they are .... I took some pics of rebuilt ones, end of this page

Ok, a few more questions:
- should those rivet heads pop off? there are no rivets there anymore.

- the rivets that hold the seal will be covered by the velcro looking stuff i received in the mail right?

- the (2) rivets that hold the trim piece go thru the velcro stuff and will be visible once i'm done with everything.

- what is the order of assembly then?

- am i missing something (parts) reason i ask is because your picture looks like you've got some fuzzies/scrubbers in there. All I got was a section of what looks like velcro material...i may have not ordered everything needed.

-lastly, do you have an assembly guide for the pivot stem & spring for the vent window?

I guess I owe you several cold ones after this huh???

- It IS a Velcro-looking product, but more like velvet or tough felt. From your description, I think you got the right item. I see what you're seeing in the linked photo, and can understand your confusion. The nap looks pretty high on Squeeze's photo. Mine that I bought about 18 months ago wasn't nearly so high. Bill, could your liner be of older vintage (i.e. better quality than the liner offered nowadays?) The nap on mine is about 1/16", probably no higher.

- The only "fuzzies/scrubbers" I have on my 'bolt are the felt liners for the gap where the side windows (not vent, but rolling up-and-down windows) disappear into the door skin. It is sold as a rigid metal bar with felt attached.

- I had to drill out my rivet heads.

One last point (as I expose my ignorance:) make DANG SURE that the vent window and the rubber gasket are situated so that it opens correctly. I used the driver's side as my go-by, and failed to consider "outboard/inboard" and now have a vent window that flaps the wrong way. I need to go back and relocate the gasket on the opposite side and fix the window swing direction. blush

that's a good'un Bill, vent opening inward would make it a one-off truck, worth more grin

- should those rivet heads pop off? there are no rivets there anymore.
> 2 Bills vote for drilling the heads off, carefully so you don't hog out the hole

- the rivets that hold the seal will be covered by the velcro looking stuff i received in the mail right?
- the (2) rivets that hold the trim piece go thru the velcro stuff and will be visible once i'm done with everything.
> if you leave the channel fuzzy for last it can cover all the rivets - I built up two assemblies using repro division bars that came with the felt liner already molded in and captured with chrome strips on the edges, but no holes in the bars - notice the "trim" is the green on the division bar in this pic [not the chrome latch striker], and it should go on before the rubber so those rivets are under the rubber

- what is the order of assembly then?
> with the glue in felt channel liner, the frame can go on first, the rubber seal next and the fuzzy liner last to cover all the rivets

- am i missing something (parts) reason i ask is because your picture looks like you've got some fuzzies/scrubbers in there. All I got was a section of what looks like velcro material...i may have not ordered everything needed.
> yes, some of the repro channel liner is stiffer than original [which was felt, like the cat whiskers Bill mentioned] - a buddy got some of the coarser velcro-y type for his panel and it seems to work fine, not sure if the softer fuzzy felt style is available anywhere as glue in, but might be

-lastly, do you have an assembly guide for the pivot stem & spring for the vent window?
> pic of pivot and spring, I'd hafta look at it again to give more detail, the pointy washer determines the direction of movement, different each side

I guess I owe you several cold ones after this huh???
be quite a while before I make it to FL wink

Thanks a million you guys. This is awesome to have access to so much experience and smarts on these trucks. This has been a dream of mine to own one of these trucks and I really want to do a good job in all the work I do.

First time I can remember that I was happy to have 2 bills!

EDIT: All rivets are installed from the 'channel' side? or the side from where the rubber w/metal insert seal is installed?

Boy I can't wait until my shop manual arrives!
