Fixin' to change the gear oil in the differential (and do some inspection of ring and pinion) and was wondering what type of gasket adhesive to use - and do both cover and housing get adhesive?

If it's a good quality gasket you should be able to use it without any adhesive,

If you are using a gasket, use motor oil. I use gasket maker pookie without a gasket.

....if for any reason you plan to pull it back off anyway soon I'd glue the gasket to the cover. Then you can reuse it...with maybe a little gasket maker pookie smile

I've always had good results using Blue Hylomar JMO.

IMO those paper diff gaskets are obsolete. Just squirt a bead of RTV around the cover, and be sure to make a circle of RTV around each bolt hole. Anything Permatex brand is a good bet.

They are not obsolete on an original truck.
And if you want something that will seal it an not leak, and its not as fussy about a film of oil like any silicon sealer is, use permatex no 2. I don't uses RTV much at all and never on an old original truck.
Why? Chevrolet didn't use it on them.

Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks.
Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.

How do you treat the gasket? I just installed a new fuel pump on my 51 and sprayed the paper gasket with that copper spray.

I treat is nice, and it acts nice for me, !!! I really don't know what you meant???? I don't spray anything on them. If its something you don't want to leak permatex it.
I guess the inner edge could be treated with shelac, or a film of sealer, is that what you are refering to?
