I need to replace my rear axle seals and looking at the shop manual it looks like quite a job that requires a lot of specialized tools and a lot of complicated steps.
Anyone out there done it? Is it possible to do it without the special tools (bearing puller etc)? How difficult is it to do? The most complicated thing I have done (by myself) is change out all my wheel cylinders flush the lines and put in new brake shoes. With my Dad I have swapped engines but that was with a lot of guidance from him. He's too far away to help me with this.
I WANT to do it myself but also don't want to have to call some tow company or something because I totally screwed it up. Any advice, encouragement, or names of good rear-end shops in the Santa Rosa, CA area would be very welcome!

To install, cut a piece of wood to cover the seal and tap the seal in with a mallet. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Cletis has it covered after the axles are removed. Have you pulled them yet & are you familiar with removeing them? They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I have to finish up the brakes and get her back in the garage! Working in the gravel is a pain in the knees. I would be done sooner but (real-paid) work and our daughter's birthday party got in the way.
With the wood and mallet to put in the seals, is that about the same as when you put in the bearing seals on the front hubs? I have done that and that wasn't so scary.
I am nervous about making sure everything goes back in the same way as it is supposed to. My Dad mentioned spider gears and spacers etc. and my shop manual doesn't have all that many pictures.
