The price sounds like wishful thinking! If it was in running shape- - - -recently- - - -maybe. Unless the price is VERY negotiable, he's probably going to have to sit on this one for quite a while.

Thanks for the quick response... The lady I talked to said there were only 100 made and the drive for the Dump bed was a chain. Care to elaborate??? I can understand Hydraulic or electric/scissor etc. But chain??? Huh???

I ran a heavy-haul wrecker once with a chain-driven recovery winch powered by a regular PTO. It's possible the dump bed pump might be chain drive, but I can't imagine much of anything else unless the bed is lifted by some sort of jackscrew. Also can't imagine any Chevy production run of only 100- - - -maybe the dump system was limited-production, but not the truck itself!

I was guessing some sort of worm gear. Thanks again Jerry. My first concern is that if they only made 100 dump models then the dump system didn't work very well. Which would be the precise reason I would buy it. Drive a classic and work it. Better than looking at it in my shop!

Thanks

$5600 sounds a little steep. Its definatly worth going and looking at.Bring us back some pics so we can get a better look.
It looks like it has the same front bumper as my GMC.

I have doubts about the 100 figure. And just because it's rare doesn't mean its valuable. There is not much interest in larger trucks and therefor they don't fetch big money. I think its overpriced.

I say........overpriced. I agree with crenwelge. It costs $1500 for tires, $1500 for brakes (at a shop) and the lists goes on and on. I rarely see one of these big bolts bring over $5000 on ebay. To me that dictates what the truck is worth, what the other guy's truck brings. I love my '49 6400 but if I were to restore it would be a financial black hole, with a factory green paint job.

Thanks.... I'm certainly not paying the 5600... but still... just seeing an original 40 GMC dump truck is worth the two hour drive.

I think the price is a high but it would all depend on a few things. How complete it is, how much needs to be replaced. It may all be there but if one of the those fenders is unreapairable, thats a problem. How much rust. It may have been stored in a barn for 56 years but that doesn't mean it was in a dry place. If it is all eaten up, it isn't worth near that much money. In the end, you may see it, love and make a deal for it for more than the last guy. These old COE's are becoming more scarse, especially complete and without trees growing through them. In the end, its what its worth to you!

I've been negotiating with a neighbor who has had a COE Chevy parked in his barn with the cylinder head off for at least the past 20 years, maybe longer. It's got a flatbed on it, about 10 feet long or so. He runs a herd of beef cattle and harvests hay, so the truck was part of his farming operation at one time. I haven't done an up close inspection for condition, but I'm planning to make him a lowball offer along with some other equipment I'm interested in buying. He's got a D-4 Cat dozer that's my primary point of interest, so the COE will be an extra detail to the deal if we make one.

Great point... however Gig Harbor is very close to Canada... my current daily driver 1996 K2500 GMC is also Canadian. Not unusual for Canadian truck to be in WA. Is there a way to check if it is Canadian???

The only serial number I found on my truck was the one located on the tag that is screwed to the passenger side of the fire wall under the hood.
The ad doesn't say that the truck is "all original", it says they have the original title and produce plates. Maybe the motor was changed if a 216 wasn't what came in it.
I am looking forward to seeing some better pictures of this truck. The ones in the ad look like they were taken with a cell phone and really don't tell us much.

Hey there's more trucks out there. Just be patient. At least one has your name on it.

Sucks you missed it, but if you're anything like me, it's probably better to finish up one project before starting another. Keeps the wife off my case.

Looks like the same truck was listed 4/11/11, on Craigslist.
