someone mentioned on another post that flipping the ring gear over on a 235/261 flywheel won't work. said one side has pointed teeth. just wanted to confirm this since i flipped mine over.. just got the tranny/clutch/etc. bolted to the motor, was planning on putting it in next week. nows the time to deal with it before it's in. thanks guys. On the 2 that I have have, both have teeth that are straight on one side and angled on the other where the starter engages. And both have wear patterns that don't look exactly clean. I'm getting a new ring gear for $30. which is worth the insurance and piece of mind IMO.

Hurray for LMC truck! My flywheel ring gear came today, I ordered it Sunday. The teeth ARE the same on both side. I still wouldn't be comfy with the worn teeth on the other side as the interior ring has to fit well. So anyway, as soon as I got home tonight I found it in the mail. My neighbor, who is building my motor, let me watch him swap it onto my flywheel. It took about 20 minutes. He starts by cleaning the used flywheel with brake cleaner. Then he set it in his mill and cut thru the old gear little by little. He then took it off the mill, gave it few taps and BOING, off snaps the gear. No hammering or harm in any way to the flywheel. To put the new gear on, he cleaned out the groove in the flywheel for the gear VERY thoroughly. The he set the gear on a tripod of sockets and warmed it up with his torch. While it was still hot he picked it up and set it right on the flywheel just like that. Rotated it so the stamped letters were above the timing mark and further lightly tapped the gear all the way around with a small brass hammer. It cools down and just like that it's done. Pretty cool. When I get my 2 groove balancer, I will bring it with the flywheel, crank, timing gear, cam gear, and new pressure plate to the machine shop to get balanced.

bigmacdaddy,

Your neighbor knows how to install ring gears. I'd only add that you can take the flywheel and put it in the deep freeze for a week before hand. That will shrink the flywheel. I would put the ring gear in the oven at say 500 for 1 hour. That will expand the ring gear nicely.

Should fit together nicely.
