Today I got all the power steering parts off of a 69 chevy school bus. It has the pump and gearbox like a smaller truck, but then it has two lines that come off the bottom of the gearbox, and go to a cylinder that hooks to the axle and tie rod. The cylinder is not in great shape. Will this work if I plug the bottom holes, and don't use the cylinder?

Hy pipeliner78, I believe the cylinder is there to be an assist to the box alone, and to take the strain off of components that are maybe a bit too light to handle the load continuously without it. I thought you had access to a few of those trucks, can't you find a ram in better condition? I'll do some reading in the maintenance manual, but for now I would say don't use the system without the ram.

Yes he has 2 more, they don't use the cylinder on the axle, but they have lines going to the master cylinder. I didn't notice the cylinder on the axle until I got the other stuff almost off.

I got the new gear box on and it turns easy to the left, but it wants to stick or jam when i turn it to the right. Any ideas?

Hy pipeliner78, does it just seem to loose the power and you can still turn it, or does it feel mechanically stuck? You do have to turn the steering lock to lock a couple of times to bleed out all the air. Are you testing it with the wheels on the ground or up in the air?

I have the wheels off the ground. It gets stuck you really have to pull on it to make it turn. This is without the cylinder hooked up, and like I said its only when you turn to the right.

Hy pipeliner78, is it difficult to turn right from any point in the travel or is it just from center to the right. Put the wheels on the ground to load the system and try to turn the wheels lock to lock a couple of times, the directional control valve may be stuck from inactivity. Was the system still sealed together when you removed it, or were hoses off and ports on the box exposed to air?

I got it fixed I turned the adjuster and got it out of the wear pattern. I turned it back and it freed up. Thanks.
