Hello, Just want some basic info.
When did Chevy go from 6 volt to twelve volt?
When did Chevy go from generators to alternators?
Did trucks with alternators come with ammeters, voltmeters, or just dash lights?
Thanks for any info.

1. In 1955
2. Supposedly, in 1963 (but might have been an option before that?)
3. ??? Probably depends on the truck and the alternator?

Hy Guys, Tim, you did a pretty good job answering Super 55s questtion, but you fell into the 55 trap. The change to 12 volt began with the 55B or second series. 1963 was the first year for alternators. And as Tim said it depends on the year of the truck and the equipment level [gauge packages]

Tim is correct about the alternator being an option before 1963. According to GM's 1962 Truck info book, alternators (called Delcotrons) were options on most models.

Also some 1963 "trucks" came with DC generators. Kind of a trick, as those were the Corvair-based trucks.
