We were told that Stewart Warner made an electrical gas guage that can mount to the top of the gas tank in a 3100? It suppose to be more accurate and the gauge would be hidden from view and not hanging under the dash like a wart. As we understand it the original sending units are not accurate and people have become frustrated with this inaccuracy. Sounds like a good idea? We have no sending unit in the tank and we have 6-12 volt conversion so it was suggested that this was a way to go? I'm not crawling under the dash, I'm too dang old! Right now we shake and listen and keep a log. Thanks Steve

year? why not replace the original sending unit and be done with it?

any aftermarket gauge can be mounted anyplace you want and the accuaracy will be about the same as original, when full it'll read about full and when empty it'll read about empty, but ..... you're worried about accuracy and want a gauge behind the seat?? grin

Who Me, where did you see this tank mount gauge? I looked on the SW web site, and couldn't find anything.
Just wondering.

Bill you are right but we have been told the new Chinese sending units are junk and can't be trusted to even work correctly even in the forums if you do a search you read nothing but trouble with the gauge or the Chinese sending unit???? Maybe they are better now?

Ole...we were at a car show and the guy was doing a truck over. He purchased an electronic SW gauge with a SW 12" fuel tank drop line and was making a cover to hold the gauge and that would bolt on to the tank opening where the sending unit goes? I guess its just an SW electronic gauge that he did not want on the dash board it is going to be custom truck. We just thought it was a great idea getting around messing with the old fuel (or Chinese) sender and gauge??? Steve

Steve - the repro AD gauges may be a problem, I don't know, but the sending units are as good as original, and as crudely accurate as any - all you normally have to do to get a full sweep [what most complain about] is bend the float arm - and you'll have to fiddle with that anyway as all the aftermarket gauges use "universal" senders that have to be adjusted to the tank you have

"accuracy" is a matter of running the tank dry watching the mileage to see what it reads as you go along, you will never get any gauge that tells you much more than F, 1/2, E, you just need to figure out where E is .... and you'll have a hard time figuring that out with the gauge behind the seat!!

and the SW gauge is electric, the same as the original, not "electronic", which implies some superior circuitry it doesn't posses, it's just an ohmeter that responds to the variable resistance of the sender, same as the original, with a different resistance - original is 30 ohms, aftermarkets use 90 ohms [as modern GM] or 240 for some

I bought 2 of the sending units, they work well. As previously stated full means full or almost full.Gas running out the fill pipe means full. Empty means almost empty. Sputter , sputter ,die means empty. All kidding aside, they seem to work as well as the original ones.
