Hey fellows,Ray K here ; I ran into a little snag & I need some info. I just got a 1973 small block 400 motor, standard pistons & bearings. Was gonna rebuild & put in 64 LWB. It has a 283 w/#7 busted piston. The 400 had an automatic trans. behind it.I'm going with a 3 on a tree. Was told the 400 was externally balanced. The 283 & 350 internally balanced. The back of the 400 crank has a dowel pin to line-up the flywheel.Does external mean the harmonic balance & the flywheel does the balancing? If so will a flywheel( clutch & pressure plate type) for the 400 do the balancing, provided of course that the new flywheel is balanced at the shop. Are the cranks that different on the 283 & the 400? Any advice & info will be appreciated. Thanks again Ray

Hy Ray, yes an externally balanced Chevy uses the balancer and the flywheel to accomplish the balance, the 400 small block and 454 big block are both externally balanced, I'm not positive but I think the flywheels and balancers are interchangable between these two engines, hope that helps.

The flywheel and the harmonic balancer do the final balancing on the 400 motor. You will need to use the 400 balancer and you will need to purchase a flywheel for the 400 small block motor. you will need to purchase an aftermarket clutch and pressure plate combination most likely from someone like CenterForce or Hays since you are going to have to purchase one of their flywheels. You will need to purchase a 168 tooth version if you plan on using the 400 starter( blolts to the block). If buy chance the starter you plan on using is the type that bolts to the bellhousing then will will need to purchase a 153 tooth flywheel for the small block 400. I know Summit carries the Hays flywheels with either tooth combination externally balanced for about $225.00. There were maybe few Chevy/GMC pickups manufactured about 1970 with manual shift trans. on the smallblock 400 but I believe all the passenger car were automatics.I think it would be a rare find to come up with a factory 400 flywheel. Let me know if you have any other questions.Paul

thanks guys for the info.Paulweldit you were right on the money with the teeth count;168 on the old 400 flywheel.I got a guy at work that swears the flywheel on my 283 will fit the 400.I have my doubts giving the difference in the two engines. I have not pulled the 283 out yet, just got it ready to pull.I will use the belhousing from the 283(if it fits the 400) so I guess i'll have to use the 283 starter(bolts to belhousing)Any other feedback is welcome & again thanks for the first round Ray
