At lease I think 235. These things are new to me and I've looked at all the casting number decoding websites and now I'm even more confused

In a 1949 3100, probably not the original engine.

Looked on the machined pad behind the dist, got 'F302B' where else should I look on the engine. So far as I've read on all the "how to identify sites" from what I can make of them this is a Flint Michigan motor produced March 02nd ??? ??? HELP PLEASE!!!

(block casting#) Between the dist and draft tube has: 3764476

ok, so what I'm getting so far is

serial# - F302B means 'Flint March 02nd 235/powerglide ?

Block date-casting - CON3 K 29 8 Means November 29th 1958 ??

and block casting # 3764476 means 1958-1962 235 ???

This is silly, I'm reading something wrong to come up with two conflicting dates... grrrr....

Your engine block was cast November 29, 1958.

Assembled F302B - 1959.
Engine was for the next model year, 1959 passenger.

Some good reading here....

thanks guys, I REALLY appreciate all your help. When you say 1959 passenger do you mean it's a passenger car motor or 1959 passenger year?

I'm assuming you mean passenger year as in it came out of a 1959 truck, was just cast in 58...

Keep in mind that the "new" models were introduced in late September every year, so blocks with I,J,K,and L would have been put into the next years model. So your block K 29 8 was cast in 1958 for the 1959 model year.

yep

Now if I need parts like tune up parts all '59 235 parts should work right (car or truck)

BUT, if it gets to me needing internals the car (powerglide) engines were hydraulic lifter whereas the truck (manual) engines were mechanical or solid lifter correct?

Sorry to be such a nuisance right off the bat guys, this is starting to make sense, but I'm still so new to the inlines that it's kind of like reading Chinese to me. There's a ton of info out there, I just can't make heads or tails of some of it

The original engine would have been a 216, replaced with a 1958 235. Correct on the tune up parts, also on the internals parts, is your engine solid lifter or hydraulic lifters? As for the truck, if its all stock then you buy parts for a 1949 3100.

I have no idea if my engine is hydraulic or mechanical lifter, haven't torn into it and hope I don't have to any time soon. That's what I was confused on by running the numbers we determined it was cast in 58 but assembled in 59 so it would be a 59 motor, but I don't know if its a 59 CAR motor or a 59 TRUCK motor...

I got that, but is that what they meant when they said mine was a passenger? I wasn't sure if they meant "passenger year 1959" or "1959 passenger CAR motor" I'm going to assume it's a CAR motor until I see otherwise as it was definitely a powerglide motor.

whew, my brain is starting to hurt... grin

F302B = Flint - March 02nd - 235/powerglide
The "B" = regular engine with powerglide transmission.
B is for passenger only .

I guess what is confusing is that you
indicated the engine was from a 1959 truck.
Truck engine serial # usually had the letter "J" and higher.

Based on the block casting date and the engine serial #
your engine was orginally from a 1959 Passenger car.

Check your lifters, should be hydraulic.
Post back and let us know.
