The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Door Skins/Shells

Hello All,

I'm still doing body work on my 56, and I need to replace the skins on the outside of the doors. The doors are still in good shape, except for the fact that both are rusted out pretty badly for about an inch above what would normally be the bottom of the outside of the door. The rest is solid and sound.
I was going to cut about a 3 inch strip straight across the bottom of both, and take them to a buddy of mine who is pretty good with a welder and have him weld a strip back.
Anyone have any feedback on this? I figure it would leave me with a pretty sound bottom. But if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to have all the knowledge I can get, before undertaking this.
I did consider buying a new set of doors, but I feel it's a shame to junk these two when there's not a whole lot wrong with them.

if your man is good enough to form them up, fly at it - there's also a skin patch available that might make it a bit easier, they do have a bit of a compound curve, and the patches I've seen have the pinch flange preformed
