In the 50's primer and paint or Rubberized rust rpoofing.

In areas on the project a 58, I found painted undercoating. While the color was correct it still could have been done later even though the truck color was changed and this was the original color. So which is it,

Under coating, primer, paint. Or Primer, paint under coating?

don't think there was any rubberized undercoating back then, would have been an asphaltic material, applied on order at the dealer so on top paint, and the only place it'd be was under floor and inside fenders where it would been black - only way I've ever seen any

It clearly states in the factory assembly manual, of 1955-1959 truck manual, that "Under body protective coating (68 oz), apply to underside of of floor panel ...."

Note:Under coating must be 1/16" thick.

Because it was painted the trucks original color I am assuming it went down first.

if you had undercoating that was painted body color the truck had a repaint, the underfloor did not get body color at the factory beyond random overspray - I don't think they got primer either .... the majority of TF trucks I've seen had no undercoating except dirt caked grease

My 58 had undercoating that looked like asphalt. Very hard to remove until I used a multifunction tool which is a sonic blade that removes the coating easily.Got it at Harbor Freight.
