They would have been a clutch head sheet metal screw, I believe a #12. Let me correct that they are #14 clutch head sheet metal screw not #12.
Here is a picture of the clutch head screws out of my '54 transmission cover. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/133229131/large

Cool. I'll check both. This gives me a place to start.

Maybe my '48 is different then others. Just double checked...My originals were 1/4-20 slotted screws, replaced the ones I could get out with SS 1/4-20.

Just bought some 1/4-20 x1/2 (lowes was outta the #12's) and they didn't fit the threads ... its dark tho and there's a couple decades worth of grime on the floor. I'll give it another shot in the AM.

1/4 x 20 is a bolt ("machine-screw") thread.

Try a #12 or #14 sheet metal screw as suggested by Denny.

I'll measure mine tomorrow.

See the correction that I made to the earlier reply, it's a #14 not #12 clutch head SM screw. My 1950 uses the same size screws. The '50 is an oval head and the '54 is a flat head, both of them clutch drive.

I've never seen a nut plate in the floor board which would be required to have a 1/4-20 cap or machine screw.
