An overdrive transmission is a good option, then you can still use it like a truck, and travel a little faster when necessary too.

Check out the "Tons o' Fun" section for more ideas if you decide ring and pinion or a whole different rear axle is what you want.

Do you have 17" tires on your 1 ton. If you install a 4.57 out of a 3/4 ton it will run 60 all day long. Thats what we did with our delivery trucks. In fact Texas raised the speed limit to 70 in 1962 and we had no trouble running 70. 4.57 gears are pretty easy to find.

I ran 4.56 gears in my 1 ton with a 55 model 235, and 8-19.5 tires at about 32" tall. It would run about 55 MPH at 2600 rpm. 50-55 seemed most comfortable but would go faster if necessary.

Took about an 8,000 mile trip in less than a month, so plenty of time to think on it, and I would have been better off with 4.11 gears.
But then back around town and in the mountains 4.56 is pretty good.

A 4.11 is nicer than a 4.56 if you can find one. They are getting pretty hard to find. It seems like more people are playing with the full floating axles these days. A few years ago all you could do with a 3/4 or 1 ton is sell the cab and front clip.
