Hi guys,
Planning on a complete drivetrain swap for my '48 half ton. Still doing my homework. What is A T5 tranny? What did it come out of? Will it bolt up to a 350? Where is the best place to find one? How much do they cost? Thanks to everyone for answering a new guys questions, Keenan

You can find t5 5speed trannys on ebay. They sell from 200 to 500. Also check Craigs list or local car clubs and newspapers. There are a number of different year trannys for different applications. Some went on small engine s10 p/u to larger engine camero and mustangs. Find one that will handle the torque and your driving habits.

Lot's of different variations of the Borg Warner 5 speed transmission. What you want for your 350 is the T5 "Z" that is found behind the 305 Camaro/Firebirds...mechanical speedo, to match your 48 mechanical gauges.

Google "T5" and check out the numbers found on the TAG or the UPC sticker to identify the T5 used behind the 305. The numbers cast into the transmission case will NOT identify the series or gearing of the box. Also check out the T5 "Hybrid" info on this site that shows you how to adapt the S10 tailshaft housing to the "Z" transmission so that your shifter is located forward of the Camaro mount.

I've been running a Non World Class (brass synchronizers) T5 "Z" hybrid box in my Hot Rod behind a well built 355 SBC with no problems and I have a bunch of pictures of the install in my Webshots 40 Album. The T5 "Z" will bolt up to your stock 350 stick shift bellhousing and you can use your stock pressure plate, T.O. bearing, a Camaro clutch disc and you don't have to use the hydraulic clutch. The T5 "Z" box has a final 5th gear ratio of .63 so matching it up with a 28" tall rear tire and a 3.73 or even 3.90 ring and pinion will keep you in the torque curve for the 350.

Tremec now makes a replacement 5 speed transmission that handles 500-600 ft-lbs of torque.....but compared to the $300.00 for a 305 Camaro box, it's a lot more reasonable than $2100.00 for the TKO's.

Be sure to gather plenty of info before you go looking for a T5 "Z" transmission. Hope this helps you get started.

Dave
