If you are interested - here is a reply I received from Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center about the availability of a new 292 engine (I generically asked about a 1973 C-20):


The engine you need for your 1973 Pick-up is part number 10121028. SDPC
sells this engine for $1659.99. This is the direct replacement engine for
you car as specified by the GM catalogs. The engine is cover by the GM
Goodwrench Warranty for 36 months or 50,000 miles for parts and labor.

Warranty -
General Motors Corporation warrants the purchaser for the time and/or
mileage indicated that it will repair or replace, at its option, using new
or re-manufactured parts, any GM Goodwrench Service Replacement Engine that
fails due to defect in material or workmanship.

Flat Fee on Truck Freight Services - Limited time Only

I have a chevy diesel that one day will need to be replaced . This 292 is a possibility I have considered . Would the price be a little less if you went to a GM dealer direct ?

Freakin, Scoggin-Dickey is a GM dealer. They are prompt on their shipments,(if it's in stock) ordered a motor on Mon. early a.m. right when they opened and it was here in Mi. at 1:30 p.m. Thurs. Also I called all over and nobody could beat their price or their shipping cost. Loco didn't have the special on freight then if I had waited 3 more days I could have saved another $81, but such is life. Another plus of buying from them rather than your local dealer there's no sales tax. That can add up quickly.

This might only apply to me, but it's kinda difficult to give up $1700 for a 292 when Sallee Chevrolet has the Goodwrench 350 by the boatloads for $1395. Or for just $195 more than the 292 you can get the Performance Goodwrench 350, complete with Edelbrock 4 bbl intake, pushing 285 hp/355 ft.-lb stock.

All things considered, as much as I love the 292, if I were buying a crate engine, dollar for dollar the Goodwrench 350 wins my vote every time.

What to do . . . what to do . . . you buy the crate 292 then you gotta buy the Stovebolt dual exhaust, the clifford intake, dress up the head with bigger valves, lumpier cam . . . by the time you are done with a new ignition system and all the right toys to make 250-300 HP you are in it for around $4000 from my point of view. If you bought a crate (292 again) and really wanted to do it right, wouldn't you have to tear it down and balance it and upgrade head / induction components to get it to run like a killer 6 anyway? Is this one of those things where you just put your fingers in your ears and say NANANANANANANA!!!!! when a bunch of people start telling you how much it is going to cost? The kids really should pay for there own college anyways huh? Thats what my folks said about me . . . and look where I am now, can't figure out if I should really do up an old 6 banger . . . what was this thread about anyway? How many days till I have to make up my mind? I hate making decisions like this. V8's look dumb in old trucks don't they?

Its only money.And its not a HP per dollar issue.If you wanna hot 292, then a 350 won't due.All you need is a block, crank, rods and head.Buy it that way used.

btw everyone. Tony's buying is everyone crate 292s for Christmas.

Vintage is okay, for those who are vintage-obsessed. But I don't care as much about spending my a$$ off to "impress" the small block crowd about the expensive potential of an inliner. Being "different" is okay to a point. And it's easy to sell but to hell with it when it becomes financially unreasonable.

It depends on what the end goal is, and I think that's Tony's point. If you want max possible performance at any cost, the a small- or big block v8 is the best choice. You can easily get 450 HP for around $3000 (or less) from a small block chevy. Put that behind a built TH400 tranny with a 3500 stall converter and for < $4G total you'll smoke any non-nitro, non-turbo inliner ever built.

It would be more affordable if we could just get someone to build a crate 292 with the goodies. The only reason the sbc parts are so cheap is mass production. I've been thinking about using a 292 with a 700r4 behind it in my 3/4 ton.
