I think the rear yoke seal on my OD tranny is leaking and I need a source for a new one. I looks to me that I should be able to replace this in the truck. Any one have experience with this? Does anyone know where I can get the seal for this job?

It is the early to mid-50's tranny with the smaller side cover. I thank you all for the info!

The seal is very common as it is the same one used on the regular 3 speed, powerglide, and 350 TH trans. Any good auto parts store will have one. However, it has been my experience that it may not solve the problem. It more than likely needs the rear bushing which will require dissassembly of the rear housing to replace it. The bushing is also a common parts store item.

Thanks Fred! I had suspected and hoped it would be a fairly common part. I will dig in and see what I need to do, thanks again!

It's probably a Standard brand seal. When you get it off there will be a number on the outside. I think I bought one at autozone.

AutoZone Timken part #5200...under $10.00 for both the seal and the tailshaft bushing. If the seal is leaking and the slip yoke has free play you can bet the bushing is wallowed out too and replacing the seal is just going to be a temporary fix.

Special tool is used to pull and reinstall the bushing with just the driveshaft/slip yoke removed, if the bushing is not totally destroyed. If it is it'll require pulling the tailshaft to fix it correctly.
