I have a good GMC 261 that I would like to rebuild and put into my 1953 GMC 5 window.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which route to go on the rebuild, ie: more horsepower, bore it out....

Or is there any reason to stay away from the 261.

The 261 has some sentimental value from the farm and it has a lot of torque, sounds nice too. But I would like to have moderate power in my truck.

Confussed in Canada

Good engine. Lots of ways to squeeze it for more power. 270s and 302s are also great engines for a 1953, however they may be harder to find up in canada. Is your truck originally canadian? if so a 261 will be a bolt in swap.

Hy AIZ, do you know what your original engine was, if it was a GMC your front crossmember won't be correct for the Chev. 261. Canadian GMCs in the early 50s could have been powered by either type of engine, hope that helps.

What engine is in there now? That will tell you if your 261 is an exact bolt-in or not. If it has a 216 or 235 the mounts will bolt right up. If it has a 228, or 248 you will need to move the crossmember or you could bolt in a 270 or 302.

I have a stock 261 in my truck right now. It is nice but if you want a good power improvement put a hot cam and a better intake on it. If you want to go really wild you can do the Cadzilla mod at Inliners- you offset grind the crankshaft and fit Cadillac pistons to stroke it.

Also, a '62 motor will need a short shaft water pump to fit in a '53.
