The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Tons 'o Fun AD front axle width?

I'm planning and figuring and trying to come up with a front axle swap and disc brake conversion for single wheel 1 ton (and 3/4) trucks.

Need to know how wide the edge of tires can be and still look like they fit under the front fenders.
So, how wide is yours, and what does it look like??
How much wider could it be and still look OK?

I already know that the stock 1 ton single wheel FRONT axle measures approximately 58.25" from Wheel Mounting Surface to WMS. I want to know how wide I can get away with.

Some measurements from my 52 1 ton (no axle right now)

With across front fenders at top center is 72.25"
Width inside fender lip at bottom of opening both front and back is 68"
Width outside rear edge of opening at the bottom is 70.5"

So I'm guessing outside of sidewall to sidewall could be 68" and look great, and might could be 70" and be OK.

Can someone please lay some straight edges on the outside of your tires and measure the overall width and also comment on how much wider you think it could be and still fit and look OK?

You need to get a hold of John and have Him Measure up The FLAGSHIP Truck,as it,s the most Unmolested 3800,1 ton single wheeler I,ve seen.

My '49 3800 front axle measures 64" to the outside of the sidewalls with 8r-19.5 tires. I think I could be comfortable with up to 2" wider on each side, but no more than that. Just my own opinion.

Grigg -- Measurements off Ole Charlie:

In stock configuration, running 7.50x19 tires

Outside of sidewall to outside of sidewall: 65 11/16"
Top of wheel sidewall to fender opening (top): 3 1/2"

Turning clearances

front of fender opening: 2 1/2"
Back of fender opening: 2"

At full throw (wheels at full turn), the tire is 1 3/4" from the rear springs (limiter at front is the shock (single action) and the clearance appeared to be 5 or 6 inches or more).

If you need more, let me know. Looks like I came within spittin' distance of Ghostrider's radial-equipped truck (beautiful truck BTW!) But I think you have less than 2 inches to play with before you run out of schlitz on the wheel opening.
