Does anyone have a picture of the rear hub and brake drum for a one ton? Not something from a shop manual but a picture of your own.

My email is [email protected]
My real problem is there are no screws or bolts showing that hold my brake drums to the hub. Where the hub comes through the drum there is is about 4 inches of axle housing and then a large flange about 8 inches across This holds the tapered bolts for the axle mounting. right next to the drum on the 4 inch axle housing there are two large slots opposite each other but I don't know what they are for. How do I remove the drums?

I think I've got this figured out as to why nothing for a '47 3/4 or 1 ton matches your truck; it isn't a 1 ton, but rather it is a 1 1/2 ton Special. From about 1939/40-Early '47, there Chevrolet did not manufacture a true "1 ton" truck, other than a "1 ton Special" which was a 1 1/2 ton chassis with light springs, single rear wheels, and was only built with a very large Panel body. But I have heard of a 1 1/2 ton Special with the same equipment that used the standard bodies. I beleive that's what you have. From what I can tell, there's an extra seal that has to come out to access the lock and adjuster nuts http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1942_47/4247csm412.htm.

You are so right. What looked like the face of a bearing was really the extra seal. I gently peeled in out with a small screwdriver and that revealed the large nut and locking nut behind. I'd still like to know what year the rear end is. The last tags on it are 2000 and it was used as a movie prop according to the last owner so I think it has had some work done on it. The rearend looks much newer than the rest of the truck and previous owner said it easily cruised at 55 mph??? Here is a picture of the hub and braake drum if you hadn't seen it. https://picasaweb.google.com/Bompajohntaylor/1947HubAndBrakeDrum?authkey=Gv1sRgCJLrmv--m7ew6wE#

Thank you for helping with my problem. You obviously know your trucks. I'm definetly not a mechanic but my father in law was for his intire life. He worked for our local bus company till retirement and before that he worked for the trolley company. They made some of there own tools and cut corners in ways that are hard to phathom. They had minds like engineers. What I do know he taught me and thats why I'm not afraid to tackle this project. It's a different challenge for me but it's really fun. Thanks again.

Hi BIGTONKA. I was wondering what sandblasting unit you were using. I've never used one before how and where do you use them. Do you purchase a special grade of sand?

Thanks for all your input.

Hi 46 1/2,

I used this guy specifically.

http://www.tscstores.com/stage/mainhome.php#loadFG_395451

It's a siphon feed sandblaster and great for small parts, but I wouldn't even think of using it on something like my frame. You can pick one of these up at Harbor Freight for $20 I'm sure. (I'm in Canada) I used it in a cabinet I built myself out of an small shipping box. It had a blower connected to a dryer vent sucking the dust out. My first attempt without a vent had me stop blasting after 10 seconds - couldn't see a thing!!

I also bought 2 bags of "sand" at the same time. It's a non-silica, so "safer" to use, although I did wear a mask while blasting.

I reclaimed as much sand as I could. I poured it into a 10 gallon plastic bucket and let the siphon hose pull it from it the bucket. I only ended up using the one bag of sand, reused it about 6 or 7 times.

Anyone who does blasting themselves will tell you what a pain it is... the sand clogs alot, it has to be super dry... you need patience! But as you can see from my brake photos, well worth it.

This BTW was also my first time using a blaster - messy messy job. I recommend getting a HUGE blue tarp and placing it under what you work on, that way you can collect the old sand easy.

The other important thing worth noting is that the parts should be free of grease. My parts were FULL of grease (blown seals)... I pressure washed, or brushed them in gas to clean them.

The air hose has a tendency to build up condensation after prolonged use when blasting as well, so a filter helps alot. I picked one up at the END of my job! :P
