The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 235 won't start

Well, I believe that I have a 56 235 in my 37 truck. The serial # is xxxxxx F 56 Z. Anyway, I unloaded it from the trailer, started it and it died. After advice from this site, I changed the plugs, points, condensor, checked the valves to make sure they aren't sticking and made sure the float wasn't sticking. The cap, rotor and wires are all good. I ran the #1 cylinder to the top, checked the timing mark thru the window near the starter and made sure the rotor was pointing to the #1 plug wire. I have strong spark on the coil wire and have spark at the plugs. Now it still won't start. It keeps backfiring thru the carb like the timing is still off. I even poured gas into the carb and it still didn't fire. This is such a simple system, I am stumped. Any suggestions?

was the engine running good previous,did you move the dizzy at any time?

It was driven on the trailer in Delaware and I started it after is was rolled off the trailer in Illinois. It was idling to warm up, died and won't restart.

any gas getting to the carb?

yes, I even replaced a partially kinked gas line from the fuel pump to the carb. Also replaced fuel filter.

It's a shot in the dark but could it have blown out a pc. of the intake gaskit when it got warm?Kinda sounds like a vac. leak. also when it got warm could the valves be adjusted to tight to run hot?If it was running when it died it can't be the timming.If you're pouring in gas and it will not start check for a bad intake gaskit.

I'll check for that. It wasn't running long enough to even get warm though.

here is a couple things. Some times the fuel tank can have rust in it and it ill suck up and clogg the pick up tube. Also There is a air horn in the carb with a spring and power piston. If your carb was not cleaned good you can have the carb cut out at random times.

Just a couple things I have had to deal with that started as a dieing after warm up issue. Try it a few times to make sure it only dies after warming up. Also blow out your fuel lines.
