I got rid of a tankful of old gas, been sitting for a year. I have spark and gas flow to the carb, but it won't start and keeps backfiring in the carb. I have tried changing the timing, but that doesn't make sense because it was just running. It's pretty common for old gas to cause valves to stick in the guides. Pull the valve cover and crank the engine, and see if you've got some valves that aren't moving right. A compression test could also help spot a cylinder or two with sticky valves. Jerry

I checked the carb and the float & needle are not stuck. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 35 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 35 | Well, timing is right on, valves aren't sticking, replaced points & condensor, now going to replace plugs (look nasty from too much idling)and coil (mechanic friend says spark from coil wire should be blue when held against ground, kind of orange color spark now). All electrical and timing seems to be OK but still won't fire and pops back thru carb. I'll let you know what happens with new coil and plugs. | | |
