on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 547 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 547 | Wanting some opinions on these. I think they may be a little expensive, but if they match it could save some headache with searching for a matching set. Check them out: Carter Carbs

It just seems to be a real pain to find two that are the same. I just bought some from a fellow bolter and they look great, not 100% sure if they are the same though, there are some minor differences. Cause of those little differences I decided to shop on Ebay and craigslist and found these. Still seem a little steep in price though....hmmm...

This was his reply, "carbs are built in pairs ,for show dual set-ups ,chech our feed back, ya can't do better ,thanks for lookin LENNY" That leads me to believe he got two cores and cobbled them together with some nice paint. Looking closely at the pictures the castings seem slightly different.

They're perfectly useable, but if you want it for looks, I would do as the other guys do, and buy them used and rebuild them yourself. Of course the guy might be just using a stock photo and if you can get him to guarantee an exact matched set or a full refund including the shipping costs, then its not a bad deal.

Here's why. When I converted my '36 Chevy Pickup from 4.11 to 3.55 gears I used a '37 Chevy car rear axle because it is the correct width and will take the 3.55 hypoid gears that were in some Chevys in 1950-54. While I had it apart, I replaced the seal at the front of the driveshaft/torque tube. The required seal has an ID of 1 1/32" (1.031).
Chevies of the 40s claims to have the proper seal for that application. I contacted them to verify the dimensions and when I squeezed them hard they told me the seal they are selling for '37-'39 Chevy applications has an ID of 1 1/16" (1.060). An incorrectly sized seal should not be offered to the unsuspecting public.
I found it unethical of them to try to withhold that information, particularly because it is a huge project to change that seal once the rear end is completed and installed.
I did some research in a seal catalog and found a double lip seal with the correct ID and got it from a local bearing supplier.
Buyer beware!
Ray
