I have a 1951 Chevrolet truck (1/2 ton). Where did the exhaust tail pipe exit when the truck came from the factory? Did it turn out behind the rear tire? Or did it go straight out the back (I guess it would have to bend down to clear the rear bumper)?? I have been looking for pictures that show the tail pipe, but haven't found any.
Thanks Don.

Neither your profile nor you post indicates what model truck you have. The correct answer depends on the model of the truck.
The Suburban (and maybe other panel body trucks) had the exhaust pipe (turn out behind the rear tire). The standard cab trucks had the exhaust pipe exit straight out the back, under the bumper.
I'll post scans from the Factory Assembly Manual, if you are interested.

Tim, my truck is a Chevrolet 3100 standard cab truck. If the factory assembly manual shows the tailpipe section that might help... I had planned on taking my existing pieces of the exhaust to a muffler shop to have new pieces bent. I believe most of the exhaust on my truck is original, but the end of the tailpipe looks like it has been damaged and cut off over the years...
Should the tailpipe go all the way back to the rear bumper? or should it stop short of the rear bumper?
Thanks, Don. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 37 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 37 | Most I've seen stop just short of the bumper midway between center and side of box. Mine is too close to center and I added the chrome extension as was seeing some residue inside the bumper on cold start up. | | |
