After 77 years of service, the metal is a bit weak. Any thoughts on where to find a replacement engine? Should I go with a more modern engine (235 c.i., 250 c.i.)? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | The 235 would be the easiest to swap in but be aware that there will be several issues to contend with. Bellhousing, water pump/fan, and front mount plate are a few that come to mind. The better 235 is the 58-62 but nothing wrong with the 54-57. It never bothers me to see the oil gauge pegged out all the time but others prefer to use the 60# gauge. This swap has been done many times so both parts and info can be found. The bellhousing bolt pattern on the back of the 250 is completely different but does take any trans/bellhousing for the 4,6, or V8 engine. With the gas price sky rocketing many are going this route along with an open driveline so shallower gears or an overdrive of some sorts can be used. I kept my 37 Buick original for the 30 years I've had it but with the last time of $4 gas and it having the optional 4.44 "city" gears I put an open drive in it with 2.73 gears. The straight 8 is a torque monster so the low end didn't suffer and it is quieter on the highway.

It was suposedly rebuilt many years ago & has been setting ever since. It has been coverred & inside. We had planned on putting it in a 36 car we are restoreing but I got the engine in it running good. It turns freely. It belongs to my partner & I know he will sell it cheap. Call John at 816-584-0563. It is in the KC area. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 843 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 843 | Wrenchbender Ret, if the engine you have is a Chevy, '34 and '35 are not the same. If the block has short water jackets it's a '34. If it has long water jackets it's a '35-'36. The heads are different too. I learned this when I was restoring my '36 Chevy pickup and was looking for original parts.

I have a head that according to the casting number chart on old car manual project says it is a 1936 206, I got it by accident someone sold it to me as a 216 head when I first started my project and didn't know any better. (Replaced it with a 5.7). It was a good runner, mo smoke, tight, good compression. Truck was so low geared I didn`t like to drive it on the highway. The only thing missing on the engine is the carburator. Located in the Nevada, Missouri area. 1st $500.00 takes it. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Wrenchbender Ret, if the engine you have is a Chevy, '34 and '35 are not the same.
